Himanta Biswa Sarma slams Sam Pitroda's inheritance tax proposal, says move will lead to financial collapse

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma ripped into Sam Pitroda on April 26 over his inheritance tax proposal saying such move will overburden the middle class and lead to financial collapse.

Speaking at an election rally in support of AGP candidate Phanibhusan Chowdhury, backed by the NDA from Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma voiced his strong opposition to Congress leader Sam Pitroda's suggestion of imposing taxes on private property.

CM Sarma while responding to remarks made by Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi, who implied that Sarma's political fate would be tied to the performance of AIUDF leader Badruddin Ajmal, the Chief Minister criticized Gogoi saying 'educated individuals' should not make such statements. He clarified that Ajmal's support did not determine Modi's position as Prime Minister of the country.

Present at the rally was AGP president Atul Bora, showing solidarity with the NDA coalition.

In addition to addressing political matters, Sarma also touched upon the issue of geotagging during his speech. He highlighted the necessity of GO tagging even for houses provided under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, emphasizing its importance in ensuring transparency and accountability. However, he noted instances of corruption where panchayat workers demanded bribes for geotagging. To combat this, Sarma announced a shift towards involving women self-help groups in the geotagging process, aiming to curb corruption and empower local communities. This announcement was made during the rally in Abhayapuri, underscoring the government's commitment to efficient and fair governance.

The Assam government has introduced geotagging as part of Mission Basundhara 2.0. Geotagging is the process of adding geographical identification metadata to various media, such as photographs, videos, websites, SMS, QR codes, or RSS feeds. The primary goal of geotagging is to track the progress of individual house construction using geo-tagged photographs
