AIUDF's Nazrul Haque eyes hat-trick in Dhubri, targets Congress rival with corruption allegations

As the 2026 Assam Assembly elections approach, the political contest in Dhubri has intensified, with sitting MLA and AIUDF candidate Nazrul Haque expressing strong confidence in retaining his seat and projecting the contest as increasingly one-sided.

Riding on his two-term incumbency and a decisive mandate in 2021, Haque has stepped up campaigning across rural pockets and riverine “Char” areas, emphasising continuity, grassroots connect, and development-driven politics. His outreach has largely focused on building trust among marginalised communities living in erosion-prone regions.

In a sharp escalation of rhetoric, Haque launched a direct attack on his Congress opponent Baby Begum, alleging corruption and financial irregularities. He claimed that she had collected money from villagers under false assurances, including promises related to tractor distribution and facilitating government-linked positions.

Haque further alleged internal discord within the Congress, asserting that certain party leaders were privately in touch with him and had indicated a lack of support for Begum. These claims, however, remain unverified, and Congress has not issued an official response so far.

Shifting focus to governance issues, the AIUDF leader criticised the BJP-led government, accusing it of neglecting the needs of Char dwellers and failing to address persistent river erosion challenges. He also took aim at the political language used by the ruling establishment, arguing that such narratives alienate sections of the population.

Highlighting his broader electoral appeal, Haque claimed support cutting across communities, including sections of the business class, which he believes could play a decisive role in the outcome.

The BJP has fielded Uttam Prasad in the constituency, setting up a multi-cornered contest. With aggressive campaigning, sharp exchanges, and competing narratives, Dhubri is emerging as one of the most closely watched battlegrounds in this election cycle.
