Assam BTC election: Nomination of independent candidate Dr. Sangrang Brahma cancelled in Chirang Duar
A major twist unfolded in the run-up to the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections as the nomination of independent candidate Dr. Sangrang Brahma from Constituency No. 14, Chirang Duar was cancelled on Thursday, September 4.
Dr. Brahma, once considered a key contender, had filed his papers as an independent after failing to secure a ticket from the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL). His disqualification has now left the battlefield open for a straight contest between Hagrama Mohilary of the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) and Khampa Borgoyary of the UPPL.
According to Chirang Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Jatin Bora, the cancellation was based on technical and legal grounds. Brahma, who currently serves as a librarian at Bodoland University, contested without formally resigning from his government post. In his affidavit, he declared himself as a social worker, thereby concealing details about his employment, which ultimately led to the rejection of his nomination.
Dr. Brahma is not new to the political circle. A former Officer on Special Duty (OSD) to BTC Chief Pramod Boro and General Secretary of the Youth UPPL, he entered the fray independently after stepping down from party responsibilities. Beyond politics, he also holds the position of General Secretary of the Assam Football Association, giving him a strong profile in sports administration.
