Assam: Non-Bodo Surakshya Samiti alleges BJP cadres backing BPF in NDA name, raises electoral concerns

Jon Das, Secretary of the Non-Bodo Surkshya Samiti, on Saturday, April 4, raised concerns over political alignments and candidate selection ahead of the upcoming Assembly election in the Baksa constituency, asserting that the region’s development hinges on electing a representative committed to safeguarding its interests.

Addressing the media, Das said the constituency requires leadership that prioritises long-term development and protection of local concerns. He expressed dissatisfaction with both the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), led by Hagrama Mohilary, and the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), headed by Pramod Boro, indicating a broader discontent with existing political options in the region.

Das stated that his organisation would not have objected if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) had fielded its own candidate in Baksa as part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). However, he alleged that BJP workers are now urging voters to support the BPF under the NDA banner, a move he criticised as politically inconsistent.

He cautioned that if the BPF is elected to power in the name of the NDA, it could lead to a vacuum in effective public representation within the constituency. Das further alleged that former BPF leader Hitesh Basumatary was removed from the party due to internal power struggles and is now contesting as an independent candidate.

The Non-Bodo Surakshya Samiti leader also raised concerns over alleged irregularities in the distribution of land pattas, describing the issue as a source of significant public resentment.

Das said these concerns reflect broader apprehensions among sections of voters in Baksa as the election approaches.
