Assam polls: Gaurav Gogoi alleges ‘double standards’ over Ajmal remarks, targets Centre and Himanta
Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi on March 27, criticised both the Centre and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, raising questions over their response to alleged remarks made by AIUDF president Badruddin Ajmal.
The controversy follows reported comments attributed to Ajmal in which he allegedly reacted s to remarks made by Chief Minister Sarma regarding the “Miya” community. Ajmal was quoted as saying he would “break the backbone” of those making such statements, triggering political reactions.
Reacting to the issue, Gogoi questioned whether appropriate legal action would be taken against Ajmal over the reported remarks, and contrasted the situation with earlier instances in Assam where strict action, including arrests, had been taken over social media posts and public statements.
He alleged inconsistency in the application of law and order in the state and accused the ruling establishment of “double standards” in handling politically sensitive matters.
Gogoi also targeted Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, accusing him of selective political responses and questioning the government’s stance on accountability and enforcement of law.
He further raised concerns over the Centre’s silence on the issue, asking whether the Union government, led by Home Minister Amit Shah, would take cognisance or initiate any action.
The Congress leader also referred to the case involving singer Zubeen Garg, alleging that public assurances made earlier by the state government had not been consistently fulfilled.
He claimed that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) had failed to bring clarity in the case and questioned the direction of the investigation.
Gogoi further alleged that political alignments in Assam had become increasingly blurred, claiming that ideological distinctions between parties such as the BJP, AIUDF, and AGP had weakened over time.
He also accused the ruling establishment of shifting political narratives and prioritising electoral considerations over accountability.
