Assam: Violence erupts in Kokrajhar during third phase of elections; UPPL and BPF clash leaves one injured

Violence marred the third phase of elections in Kokrajhar as clashes erupted between youth members of the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF). The incident occurred near the central BPF office on JD Road in Kokrajhar Town, resulting in one BPF youth member sustaining injuries and being rushed to RNB Civil Hospital.

The clash, which took place amidst the election fervor, involved alleged attacks by UPPL youth members on their BPF counterparts.

Both UPPL and BPF are key contenders in the electoral race, with Joyanta Basumatary representing UPPL and Kampa Borgoyary standing as the BPF candidate. As the Lok Sabha constituency of Kokrajhar boasts a significant voter base of 14.94 lakh individuals distributed across 1862 polling stations spanning nine Assembly segments, the outcome of such clashes could potentially influence the elections.

Earlier in the day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had expressed satisfaction over the peaceful conduct of the elections, asserting that the third phase proceeded without any reported instances of violence or disturbances across the state.
