Himanta Biswa Sarma is "Suma Mama" of Assam: Akhil Gogoi

Raijor Dal chief and MLA Akhil Gogoi on April 4 criticised Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma over his alleged public displays of affection towards women in the state, calling him as “Suma Mama”.

Addressing a large election rally in Assam’s Goalpara East Assembly constituency on Saturday, that drew a crowd of over 10,000 people, Akhil Gogoi claimed that his campaign across Lower and Upper Assam reflected a shift in public sentiment. He expressed confidence that the BJP-led government would be voted out in the upcoming elections and stated that Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi could emerge as the next Chief Minister, with support from Raijor Dal and its allies.

Gogoi also launched a sharp attack on the BJP and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, criticising the government’s policies and raising concerns related to governance and public rights. He further made remarks targeting the Chief Minister over recent public interactions, which have drawn political attention.

Raijor Dal president Akhil Gogoi addressed the gathering while campaigning for the party’s candidate, Abdur Rashid Mandal. During his speech, Gogoi said that if the opposition alliance comes to power, Mandal would be considered for a ministerial position.

At the rally, Gogoi outlined a set of commitments, stating that an alliance government would prioritise the rehabilitation of evicted families, distribution of land pattas to landless people, expansion of irrigation facilities to strengthen agriculture, and completion of the pending National Register of Citizens (NRC) process to address public grievances.
