Is Himanta Biswa Sarma ready for national politics? Assam CM answers
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma addressed growing speculation about his potential entry into national politics, clarifying that he will take such a step only when the timing is right and the political conditions are favourable.
Speaking candidly on various issues, Sarma outlined a phased approach, emphasising that the “backbone” of entrenched political structures in Assam must first be challenged and sufficiently weakened before he considers moving to the national stage.
The Chief Minister also addressed the trend of election promises that he believes are largely superficial. “Some people say, ‘Make me an MLA and I will establish a new university.’ Others say, ‘Make me an MLA and I will build a medical college.’ These kinds of claims—everyone has heard them,” Sarma said, noting that such pledges rarely translate into meaningful change. He stressed that personal milestones, like marriage, have no bearing on political participation and suggested that candidates should avoid basing their campaigns on unrealistic promises.
On the progress of his political initiatives in Assam, Sarma acknowledged that the impact so far has been largely superficial. “Right now, the impact has only been superficial; it needs to strike at the core. Within five years, that backbone will break,” he asserted, indicating that his strategy is focused on long-term structural change rather than immediate, visible results.
Sarma also touched on persistent state issues, including eviction-related challenges. He noted that fully addressing these problems could take decades, demonstrating a pragmatic understanding of Assam’s complex socio-political landscape.
While Sarma did not announce any immediate move toward national politics, his statements make clear that such a step is part of a long-term plan. “If I move into national politics, those whom I have challenged will feel the pressure. First, the backbone needs to be broken—only then will I move ahead,” he explained, signalling a cautious but determined approach to expanding his political influence beyond Assam.
This candid assessment offers a glimpse into Sarma’s strategic thinking, combining long-term vision for the state with careful planning for potential national-level engagement.
