Guwahati, November 19, 2019:

Assamese singing icon Babu Baruah has landed in the soup after his latest video 'Majuli Gabhoru' stirred up controversy moments after it was released online on YouTube.

The song, which has been described as a "heart touching Assamese song", depicts the plights of a young girl residing in the river island.

The protagonist called Majuli, played by actress Nandini Kasgyap, is shown begging for alms while clad in Sattriya dance clothes. Moreover, the protagonist is shown sharing a single plate of food with her mother.

In a later scene, it is shown that Majuli and her family are outcast from society after the girl had entered a sattra.

This video has left netizens in a state of bewilderment. Haters have alleged that the video shows Majuli in a poor light and tarnishes the image of Assam's cultural nerve-centre. Moreover, people have alleged that there is no rule against girls entering sattras in Majuli, and thus, the scene in Babu's video is absolutely unnecessary.

One angry YouTube user, reacting to the video, wrote, "We are absolutely proud of being a Majulian first have some correct information and then depict majuli in your song."

Responding to these allegations, Times Music Assamese, which had posted the video on its channel, clarified, "This audio-visual cinematograph film is a work of fiction. We do not intend to disrespect, impair or disparage any place or the feelings and sentiments of any person(s), community(ies) and their culture(s), custom(s), practice(s) and tradition(s)."
