First teaser for Harry Potter series rekindles magic of 'The Boy Who Lived'

A return to the wizarding world is on the horizon, and the first teaser for the new Harry Potter television series leans heavily into the sense of wonder that defined a generation.

Opening with the familiar setting of Privet Drive, the footage revisits the quiet beginnings of Harry’s story — a boy confined to a cupboard under the stairs, overlooked and unwelcome. Dominic McLaughlin steps into the role of Harry Potter, capturing those early moments of isolation before the story shifts towards discovery and belonging.

The teaser follows a well-known path: the arrival of the Hogwarts letter, a first meeting with Hagrid, and the journey into a world hidden in plain sight. From a rush through Platform 9¾ to glimpses of the Hogwarts Express, the scenes echo memories long associated with the franchise, while presenting a refreshed visual style.

Moments of friendship are central. Early interactions between Harry, Ron and Hermione — now played by Alastair Stout and Arabella Stanton — hint at the bond that has long been at the heart of the story. The teaser also offers brief looks at the Sorting Hat ceremony, Quidditch matches, and a snow-covered Hogwarts during the festive season.

The adult cast brings a new interpretation to familiar characters. John Lithgow appears as Albus Dumbledore, alongside Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape, and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid. Several Hogwarts students and key figures from Harry’s world also feature, though the role of Lord Voldemort remains uncast.

Based on the books by JK Rowling, the series is written and executive produced by Francesca Gardiner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes. The project is planned as a long-term adaptation, with each season dedicated to one novel and the full arc expected to unfold over the next decade.

The return inevitably draws comparisons to the original film series, which began with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and introduced audiences to Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint. Those films, released between 2001 and 2011, shaped the childhood of many and established the visual language the new series now revisits.

The upcoming adaptation does not attempt to replace that legacy, but rather to return to the source with more time and detail — a slower journey through a story that has remained part of popular culture for over two decades.

The series is scheduled to premiere on Christmas Day 2026 and will stream on HBO Max, with production led by HBO in collaboration with Warner Bros. Television.
