MUMBAI: After starring in period films like Manikarnika and with Thalaivi lined up, Kangana Ranaut has announced a new project where she will be seen essaying the role of former Prime Minister of India, Indira Gandhi.
As per an official statement released by the actress, the film is yet to get a title and will soon have more prominent actors as a part of the project. "Yes, we are working on the project and the script is in the final stages. It is not the biopic of Indira Gandhi, it is a grand period film, to be precise a political drama that will help my generation to understand (the) socio-political landscape of current India," said Kangana, in a statement released by her office.
Confirming it further with a tweet, Kangana shared an old picture of her dressed as Indira Gandhi and tweeted, "This is a photoshoot about iconic women I did in the beginning of my career, little did I know one day I will get to play the iconic leader on screen."

In another tweet, she shared a series of pictures of the late Prime Minister with the caption, "She was very beautiful, not pin up girl type beautiful, her face was like when all the swords are drawn just before the King’s command....- Khushwant Singh"
Kangana Ranaut added in her statement that "the film is based on a book", although she did not elaborate on which written work. It is being said that the film will also see actors portraying Sanjay Gandhi, Rajeev Gandhi, Morarji Desai, and Lal Bahadur Shashtri among other prominent figures and will feature the Emergency period and Operation Blue Star.
Sai Kabir, who worked with the actress in Revolver Rani has been taken on board for directing, story writing and screenplay of the project.
