Kirk Douglas, Hollywood Legend, Passes Away at 103

LA, February 6, 2020:

Kirk Douglas, the Hollywood legend best-known for his "I am Spartacus" scene from the Stanley Kubrick-helmed movie peacefully passed away on Wednesday, February 5. He was 103.

Douglas was also nominated for an Oscar three times - for Champion (1949), The Bad and the Beautiful (1952), and Lust for Life (1956). He eventually won the honorary award in 1996, in recognition of his 50 years in the industry.

Legendary Director Steven Spielberg, reacting to Douglas' death, said that the actor has left behind a "breathtaking body of work".

"Kirk retained his movie star charisma right to the end of his wonderful life and I'm honoured to have been a small part of his last 45 years," Spielberg opined.

Douglas might have lived a long life, but his life was beset with troubles. In 1991, the legend survived a helicopter crash that left two people dead. Five years later, he suffered a major stroke that affected his speech.

Tragedy would strike the Douglas family again in 2004 as Eric, Douglas' son died at the age of 46 of an accidental drug overdose.

Later in his life, Douglas became known for his charitable activities, and is said to have donated millions towards charitable causes over the years.
