Guwahati, June 22, 2019:

The World Music Day concert, organized annually by musicians Sourendro and Soumyojjit in Kolkata is an effort to conceptualize Indian music against the backdrop of an international soundscape.

Over the years, the concert has presented a wide range of pan-Indian subjects- the story of the Kohinoor diamond, the history of Indian film music, the Mahabharat -- through global musical forms such as jazz, rock and roll, and broadway style musicals. The concert has always been an effort to celebrate the great unity and diversity of Indian music in relation to the world.

This year's concert - held on June 20 at Nazrul Manch, did no different. The concert celebrated 100 years of two great icons of Indian music: Hemant Kumar and Manna Dey. It showcased musicians from across the nation, who came together to pay tribute and to celebrate these legends, Asha Bhonsle graced the occasion with her presence and spoke of how a young Maharashtrian girl joined forces with two composers from Bengal to create music the country will forever remember. Sadhana Sargam - also from Maharashtra, Benny Dayal from Kerala, Kaushiki Chakraborty and Anupam Roy from Calcutta, and Papon from Assam all came together to collectively lend their voices to two national heroes. The concert, therefore, was not just a tribute to Manna Dey and Hemant Kumar, but also a way of celebrating the way in which Indian music allows us to transcend the boundaries that might separate us, and come together in harmony and friendship.

In the event on World Music Day, Assam’s singer, Angaraag Mahanta (Papon) sang “Ami Je Jalshagare” sung by Manaa Dey and “Beqarar Karke Hume” by Hemant Kumar. And for people demand, he sang smash hit 'Moh Moh Ke Dhage' too.
