Assam: Migratory birds found poisoned in Jorhat's Barsala Beel, environmentalists raise concerns over birds' safety

A section of miscreants are killing the migratory birds that are on their seasonal visit to the state due to winters. Visitors, environment activists have stumbled upon carcasses of migratory birds in Jorhat’s Barsala Beel and have raised concerns over the safety of these winged creatures.

Miscreants are poisoning these migratory birds by feeding them Poradon, a type of chemical and a poisonous substance.
It is noteworthy, a wide variety of white-winged ducks, grey legged geese, and other exotic birds come to various Beels and water bodies, including Barsala, Patiyasala in Jorhat, which covered almost 100 hectares of land adjacent to Jorhat town.

These migratory birds come from Thailand, Malaysia, Australia and other countries. But some inhuman activities have decreased the numbers of these birds.

"The bird found dead is called grey-legged geese. It is not the first time, but earlier too we found these birds dead. We brought the birds to our office. I was accompanied by one Arindam, he is a veterinary doctor. After providing them treatment, we were able to save one while the other died. Today, when we went to the spot for clicking photos, we found one grey-legged geese lying unconscious. While we were bringing the bird to our clinic, the bird died while on the way. We were extremely sad as we couldn’t save the bird on time,” says Dhrubajyoti Baruah, Wildlife photographer.

There has been a gross failure on the part of the administration to provide a safe environment for these birds, whose visit also pulls huge number of tourists, environmentalists, wildlife photographers just to look at these birds and learn about their habits.

The area which was till few months ago buzzing with variety of migratory birds, has now turned into a death trap as multiple miscreants have taken up to kill these birds.
