Indian Roller found dead on Bhupen Hazarika Setu, raises ecological concerns

The body of an Indian Roller was found on the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Setu on Saturday morning, raising concerns over the impact of infrastructure on wildlife in ecologically sensitive areas of Assam.

The bird was spotted by early commuters near Sadiya. Officials said there was no immediate evidence of a collision, and the exact cause of death remains unknown.

Known for its bright blue plumage and aerial display, the Indian Roller is commonly seen across Assam’s riverine plains, often inhabiting open fields and wetlands. Its presence on a high-speed transport corridor has prompted questions about risks faced by avian species in such zones.

Local residents expressed concern over the incident. “Seeing such a bird dead on the bridge is both shocking and disheartening,” a passerby said, while another highlighted the need to balance development with environmental protection.

The bridge, spanning the Brahmaputra, cuts through a landscape of wetlands, grasslands and forest fringes that support diverse birdlife. Environmental observers pointed to factors such as speeding vehicles, wind turbulence and artificial lighting as potential threats to birds.
