Bangladesh National Enters India via Assam's Karimganj, Seeks "Treatment" for Corona

Silchar, April 26, 2020:

A sickly man from Bangladesh caused a hue-and-cry in Assam on Sunday after he swam across a river and entered Assam's Karimganj district, wherein he asked to be "treated" for the COVID-19 infection. The situation naturally created panic across several villages who alerted the local authorities.

The man was eventually identified as Abdul Haque, a resident of Sunamganj district of Bangladesh. Subsequently, he was later handed over by Border Security Force (BSF) authorities to Border Guards Bangladesh (BGB).

Deputy Inspector General JC Nayak, BSF spokesperson based at Silchar told The Hindustan Times that the Bangaldeshi national swam across the Kushiyara river located on the border between the two countries and entered India around 7:30 am on Sunday. He was later stopped by villagers who informed the security personnel deployed in the bordering area about his presence.

This incident happened at a place called Mubarakpur, approximately 4 kms away from Karimganj town on an unfenced portion of the boundary between two countries.

The BSF source that the person had fever, didn’t look too well and was speaking incoherently. He was claiming that he was suffering from Covid-19 and crossed the river to seek treatment in India.

The BSF authorities informed their Bangladeshi counterparts BGB about the presence of the man. Later, the Bangaldesh personnel came to the Indian side in two boats and took the man back around 9 am.
