New Delhi, October 5, 2019:

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina took a jibe at the Indian Government over the decline in onion exports to the neighboring country.

"We are having problems over onions and I don't know why India has stopped exporting onions to Bangladesh. I even told my cook to cut out onions from food", she joked.

With that remark, Sheikh Hasina jokingly drew the attention to India's ban on onion exports. It may be mentioned here that she made the remark while speaking at the India-Bangladesh Business Forum.

"We are facing some problems because of the ban on onion exports from India. I don’t know why you banned these export. It would have been better if you had alerted us in advance—we could have sourced onions from other countries. You banned it suddenly and it became a problem for us", Hasina further added.

India’s ban on onion exports due to soaring domestic prices has hit Bangladesh, too. Meanwhile, Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan warned the hoarders and black marketers, that strict action will be taken against them, as onion prices have soared across the country due to disrupted supply due to floods in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and some southern states.

Onion prices have skyrocketed in the last one month due to short supply from flood-hit onion-growing states like Maharashtra and Karnataka.
