Bangladesh Refuses to Accept Assam's 'Undocumented Migrants' Post-NRCundocumented migrants

Guwahati, July 19, 2019:

As the dates of the publication of the final draft of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) have come close, new twists are emerging in the story, creating confusion for the people.

After the announcement made by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah to implement NRC in all the states in the country, the Bangladesh government has expressed concerns over the fallout of Assam NRC process aimed at identifying undocumented migrants.

Bangladesh Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told a local television channel that there exists anxiety in Bangladesh after reading news reports. Saying that Bangladesh is the most densely populated country on the planet, the Foreign Minister expressed, “We are already in much difficulty with the 11 lakh Rohingya refugees in the country, so we can’t take anymore.”

Denying that the people identified under the NRC process to be Bangladeshi immigrants, AK Abdul Momen added that those people have been residing in India for 75 years, they are Indian citizens, and not Bangladeshis.

On one side, the Indian government is claiming to make preparations to deport undocumented migrants, and on the other hand, the Bangladesh government has categorically denied accepting any migrants from India.

Meanwhile, it is being widely believed that even if the illegal migrants are identified, there is no scope for them to be deported.
