Bhutan has passed a legislation introducing a sustainable development fee of Rs. 1200 per day for tourists from India. The fee also applied to tourists from Bangladesh and the Maldives from July, 2020.
The sustainable development fee came as a result of an increase in Indian tourists. It is said that there was a ten percent hike in the number of tourists from the three countries since 2018.

Government sources in New Delhi reportedly, said, that the Tourism Levy and Exemption Bill of Bhutan 2020, which the National Assembly of Bhutan is still discussing, imposes a nominal fee to develop tourism facilities and infrastructure. This bill includes additional provisions for tourists from the region to Bhutan.

The authorities in Bhutan have assured that the tourists would not be impacted following the enactment of the new sustainable development fee.
