New Delhi, August 15, 2019:

India's neighboring country China has formally asked for “closed consultations” in the United Nations Security Council to discuss India revoking the special status to Jammu and Kashmir after Pakistan wrote a letter on the issue to Poland, the Council President for the month of August, a top diplomat said.

“China asked for closed consultations on the Security Council agenda item ‘India Pakistan Question’ The request was in reference to the Pakistani letter to Security Council President,” the diplomat said.

The Pakistan Foreign Minister has said that China backed Pakistan on the issue and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang told him he believed “China will stand up for justice on the Kashmir issue.”

Meanwhile, the United Nations and the United States have asked India and Pakistan to maintain peace after the Narendra Modi government scrapped Article 370, which granted special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir.

The US said it was “closely” observing the events in Jammu and Kashmir and urged all stakeholders to maintain peace and stability along the Line of Control (LoC).

Meanwhile Pakistan has summoned the Indian High Commissioner to Islamabad to register the country’s “unequivocal rejection” of India’s decision to scrap Article 370 and 35A.

Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan also spoke with the leaders of Turkey and Malaysia to brief them on the situation on Monday, according to statements from his office.

The Narendra Modi government revoked Article 370 which gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
