New Delhi, April 10, 2020:

According to latest official figures, as many as 6,741 people across India have been infected by the novel coronavirus or COVID-19 so far. 206 of the cases have resulted in deaths However, in a positive development 516 of the patients have been cured/discharged from hospitals.

With 210 persons testing positive on Friday, the number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra has risen to 1,574. It is the worst affected state in the country and has recorded 97 deaths till now.

The total number of coronavirus cases in the national capital New Delhi on Friday climbed to 903, with 183 fresh cases and two deaths, raising the total number of deaths to 14. Delhi has now marked 30 areas as 'containment zones' to check the spread of the virus.

Gujarat added 70 new coronavirus cases and the total has now risen to 378.

Meanwhile, 21 of fresh 23 coronavirus cases are related to the Tablighi Jamaat event and the total count is 433 in Uttar Pradesh.

Punjab, which earlier today extended the lockdown, has now made it mandatory for people to wear masks in public places, to prevent the spread of Coronavirus.

In the Northeast Indian region, Assam has recorded the most number of cases at 29, with one of those having died due to complications. Tripura and Manipur have recorded two cases of the virus, while Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh have reported one case each.

Earlier today, 65-year-old Faijul Haque Barbhuyan, hailing from Hailakandi, passed away around 2 AM on April 10 following complications of the virus. The 65-year-old was undergoing treat at the Silchar Medical College. The Hailakandi district administration performed his last rites with Islamic burial practices at a secluded place several kilometres away from the densely populated town. Attended by a few relatives and friends while maintaining social distancing, his last rites were performed by an Imam, as his mortal remains shrouded in a white piece of cloth was lowered in a grave dug 12-feet deep, just moments after the Janaja (funeral) prayer.

Global Figures:

Worldometers.info reports that 1,647,896 people have contracted the new coronavirus across the globe. Alarmingly, 100,268 people have died due to the virus, while roughly thrice that number (369,173) have made recoveries. The United States accounts for 478,366 of the cases, and will soon overtake Italy in the death count. Italy has reported 18,849 deaths, while the US has reported 17,927, which a sharp spike of 1,236 deaths in the last 24 hours.
