Mexico city buildings swayed by massive earthquake

MEXICO: A powerful earthquake struck near the Pacific resort city of Acapulco on Tuesday night, causing buildings to rock and sway in Mexico City nearly 200 miles away.

There were no early reports on damage in the city, however, some residents said that electricity was knocked out in some neighbourhoods.

The US Geological Survey said the quake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and was centred 8 kilometres (about 5 miles) east-southeast of Pueblo Madero in Guerrero state, about 48 kilometres (30 miles) inland from Acapulco.

The Mexican seismological service had reported a preliminary magnitude of 6.9.

No early reports of causalities have been registered.
