Nepal's Parliament Speaker Resigns after Rape Allegations

Nepal's Parliament Speaker, Krishna Bahadur Mahara has resigned from his post on Tuesday after an allegation of raping a woman staffer was raised against him in the federal parliament secretariat.

Reportedly, Mahara tendered his resignation letter to Deputy Speaker Shivamaya Tumbahamphe.

In the letter, Krishna Bahadur Mahara stated that his resignation will allow a fair investigation over the allegations made against him.

However, the speaker had denied the allegations against him by the woman.

According to reports, a video surfaced in the news channels of Nepal in which the woman claims that she has known Krishna Bahadur Mahara. She also claimed that Mahara has behaved indecently with her in the past. She also alleged that he had visited her rent house in a drunken state on September 23 when she was alone. Though she tried to stop him from entering her home but he did not listen and abused her.

Media reports said that the secretariat of Nepal Communist Party (NCP) had met earlier on Tuesday and decided that Krishna Bahadur Mahara should step down from the post.
