The US Geological Survey believes the origin of the earthquake was centred 219 kilometres south-southeast of the town of Severo in Russia's Kuril Islands north of Japan. It was 56 kilometres deep. At the same time, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said a tsunami watch was issued for the state of Hawaii.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 1,000 kilometers of the quake's epicenter. The Center also said that such earthquakes have been known to cause tsunamis far away from the originating epicentre.

Meanwhile, the Japan Meteorological Association has warned against slight tidal changes, but informed that no warnings had been issued.

There were no reports of damage or casualties.
