United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed grave concern over rising hostilities between India and Pakistan, urging both nuclear-armed neighbors to show "maximum restraint" to prevent the situation from further destabilizing the region. His appeal follows the deadly April 22 Pahalgam attack, which claimed 26 lives and has been attributed to Pakistan-based terrorist outfits, sharply intensifying cross-border tensions.

In a carefully worded statement, Guterres extended his deep appreciation to both nations for their longstanding and invaluable contributions to UN peacekeeping missions. However, he voiced dismay at the deteriorating ties between New Delhi and Islamabad, warning that relations have reached their most dangerous point in years.

"I hold immense respect and gratitude for the people and governments of both India and Pakistan for their remarkable service to UN peacekeeping. Yet, it pains me to see their relationship teetering on the edge," the UN chief remarked.

Condemning the attack in Pahalgam, Guterres reiterated that assaults targeting civilians are “unacceptable” and demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice through credible and lawful means. He also extended condolences to the families of the victims.

Amid growing fears of a military standoff, Guterres cautioned against any escalation, warning that armed confrontation could spiral beyond control. "Let there be no doubt: a military solution is no solution. At this precarious moment, stepping back from the brink is essential," he stated.

Reaffirming the UN’s readiness to assist, Guterres offered to mediate and support any peace initiative aimed at de-escalation and diplomatic resolution. He underscored the urgent need for dialogue to defuse the crisis, highlighting the United Nations' enduring commitment to regional stability.

The Pahalgam attack has added fuel to an already volatile relationship, with rhetoric from both sides intensifying in recent days. Guterres’ call for calm and constructive engagement arrives at a pivotal moment as the specter of military escalation looms large over South Asia.
