Guwahati, 24 January 2019:
Amid the growing opposition against the controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has called for a meeting of all political parties in the state on January 29 to discuss the issue.
The BJP is heading a coalition government in the state with the National People's Party (NPP), Naga People's Front (NPF) and the Lok Janshakti Party.
Six students' organisation of the state along with the women organisation 'Meira Paibi' have also announced that they would launch an agitation against the Bill at New Delhi when the Bill would be introduced in the Rajya Sabha.
N Biren Singh had previously stated that the Bill will have no effect on the state and they are against its implementation.
The Manipur Cabinet in its January 10 meeting chaired by the chief minister had urged the Centre to exempt the state from the jurisdiction of the Citizenship Bill.
