The proscribed Maoist Communist Party, Manipur, has called for a 48-hour bandh from December 16-17. Security has been beefed up in the state prior to the bandh.
The outfit has called the bandh demanding the reconstruction of Mongba Hanba Khabam and Khurai Ahong Pung shrines. They have further demanded that the name of ‘Manipur’ be changed to an indigenous one.
Armed police have been checking and frisking vehicles and security forces have reported that they have arrested a youth, identified as Mohammad Nishar Ahamed (30), with a hand grenade.
Meanwhile, the Manipur government has warned that employees, who will remain absent from duties during the bandh period, will face the consequences. Shops and other establishments have also been asked to remain open.
