Lok Sabha MP Jayant Sinha asked a pertinent question at the lower house on Wednesday pertaining to the safety and security of the Northeastern people dwelling in national capital New Delhi.
Sinha, posing a question to Minister of Home Affairs G. Kishen Reddy, asked if the Government is aware that a large number of Northeastern people are dwelling in New Delhi and facing security concerns. He further asked what steps the Government has taken to improve their "safety and security". Thirdly, he asked whether separate institutional steps have been taken by the Delhi Government to address their grievances.
In response, Reddy stated that Delhi Police has a Special Unit for the People of Northeast Region (SPUNER) was set up by the Delhi Police on 14 February, 2014, for addressing faced by people hailing from Northeastern region and living in Delhi.
In addition, Delhi Police has instituted a number of measures for safety and security of people hailing from Northeastern region, of which major ones include: 'Zero Tolerance Police' for tackling problems, introduction of special helpline number 1093, regular interaction liaison meetings with people of the Northeast region by Joint Commissioner of Police cum NODAL Officer for Northeast region and also by district deputy commissioners of police, sanitization of poloce personnel augmenting representation of people from Northeastern region in Delhi police and dedicated PCR vans with police personnel also of NE origin.
