Manipur’s Information & Public Relations (I&PR) Department has for the first time given away financial assistance to journalists under the Manipur State Journalists Welfare Scheme (MSJWS). It was formally given away by I&PR Minister Thongam Biswajit here on Monday.
Of the three journalists selected for financial assistance under the scheme, one of them was awarded posthumously.
The scribes are former staff reporter of Sangai Express Nepram Tombi Meitei and Lamka editor and publisher, Lamka Post Th. Thangzalian, besides former Churachandpur senior correspondent of Information Service Television Network late G Muanthang.
Under MSJWS, a journalist having completed minimum 10 years in the profession and who is an Indian citizen and ordinarily a resident of Manipur, irrespective of his or accreditation status, is eligible to apply for benefit.
Financial assistance under the scheme is also provided to a journalist in case of him or her becoming permanently disable and is incapable of earning a livelihood and towards the cost of treatment of major ailments that are permissible for full re-imbursement under the medical re-imbursement facility of the State government.
However, relief under this provision would be available to any journalist only up to the age of 60 years.
