Imphal (Manipur), 31 July 2018:
Fearing exodus of lakhs of illegal immigrants into Manipur from Assam following publication of the complete draft of National Register of Citizens (NRC), Chief Minister N Biren Singh said his government has sounded a high alert across the State and tightened security in bordering areas.
Speaking to media, Singh claimed that the government was closely monitoring the situation after release of NRC data in Assam. The government had also deployed two extra companies of security forces to assist the Jiribam police to strengthen security arrangement in the district, including road openings and patrolling in the border area, he added.
The Chief Minister said extra police personnel had been sent to Jiribam to help assist in checking entry of illegal immigrants into Manipur through the main gate bordering Assam’s Cachar district. He added that CRPF that was deployed for the Railways has also agreed to extend help to the State government for beefing security measure in the bordering area.
