Imphal, December 9, 2019:

Amid the ongoing protests across the Northeast against the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2019, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has informed that Union Home Minister, Amit Shah had informed him that the Inner Line Permit (ILP) system would be enforced in the State. Shah has also announced that the ILP regime will be enforced "soon" in Manipur.

According to Biren, the ILP would be implemented in order to exempt Manipur from the purview of the contentious CAB.

The  Chief Minister has further stated that the people of Manipur should thank the Central Government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their "concern."

It may be mentioned here that during his speech in Parliament, Amit Shah had said that the ILP would be brought soon in Manipur, although the actual Bill presented in the Parliament does not mention it.

Meanwhile, the government of Manipur has issued an order, asking all employees to celebrate the decision by carrying photographs of PM and HM.

The communique was issued by Kh. Raghumani Singh, the Special Secretary (Home) of the Government of Manipur.

Meanwhile, the grapevine reports that Kokborok, the lingua franca of the Borok people of Tripura, is likely to be included in the 8th Schedule of the Constitution, becoming the 23rd language to be included in the list.

The inclusion of Kokborok, which is closely related to the Bodo, Dimasa and Kachari languages of the neighbouring state of Assam, has been a long-standing demand of the tribals of Tripura.

Apart from the inclusion of Kokborok in the 6th Schedule of the Constitution, the Government also intends to exclude the Tribal Autonomous Council in the state, where the demand for a separate state is gaining momentum with each passing day, from the purview of the CAB.

Moreover, the Government has also announced that the areas under the ILP regime, and the areas protected under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution, will be excluded from the purview of the contentious Bill.
