Joint Authorities of Manipur destroys Poppy worth Rs 2 crore

Guwahati, January 22, 2019:

The persistent poppy plantation has long been a problem in Manipur.  A team of Assam Rifles Singhat Battalion, Churachandpur Sector , Narcotics and Affairs of Border and Churachandpur Police destroyed poppy worth over 2 crores in Lungthul T village near the India Myanmar border.

Most of the money from poppy plantation is recycled to fund and support the insurgent groups for anti-National activities as claimed by officials.

The chief and the people of the village, Lungthul T ensured the police that no part of their land would be used for plantation of poppy in the future.

It may be mentioned that the poppy plantation is a very common issue in the state especially in the border areas of the Churachandpur. Earlier on December 13, Manipur authorities teamed up to destroy Rs. 6 crores worth of poppy plants. The plants were spread across 30 acres in the Machi hill range in the hilly district of Tengnoupal. The team destructed of the plants that were used to manufacture intoxicating substances such as opium, morphine, codeine, and heroin.
