IMPHAL: Single Bench High Court of Manipur today ruled the election of MLA Okram Henry Singh, who was elected from Wangkhei AC of Imphal East district, as null and void following a challenge by the BJP's Yumkham Erabot.

Y Erabot is among three veteran Congress leaders (including chief minister N Biren Singh) who switched to the BJP ahead of elections, turning the tide in Manipur.

Justice MV Muralidaran cited the ‘false affidavit’ submission to the Election Commission by Congress MLA Henry Singh.

As per the cause list of the High Court of Manipur uploaded on their website, the election petition of 2017 was listed as item number 1 before the Single Bench of Justice MV Muralidharan.

The judgment order was kept reserved by the same bench after the conclusion of the hearing on  March 17,  2021.

In the election petition,  Y Erabot who contested the said election from BJP ticket alleged that his Congress rival O Henry violated the provisions of Representative of People’s Act 1951 during the election nomination process.

Following the ruling, Y Erabot Singh will be the new MLA of Wangkhei constituency and has reportedly called upon Manipur Legislative Assembly Speaker Yunmnam Khemchand to stake his claim.

Okram Henry Singh is among the 5 new MLAs given minister status by N Biren Singh. Henry held the portfolios of Social Welfare, Cooperation, and MAHUD.
