19 July 2018:
Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Thursday visited students, including student leader Sheetal Oinam, who were injured during a scuffle between the students and the police on Monday. The scuffle took place when the students were staging a protest demanding the resignation of Manipur University vice chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey.
Accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister, other Cabinet Ministers and senior officials, Singh met the injured students at the Raj Medicity in state capital Imphal.
The Chief Minister said the state Government fully empathised with the Manipur University community.
“As per the wish of MUTA, MUSU and MUSA, the state government persuaded the Central government to form a Committee headed by a retired Chief Justice of a High Court to investigate the allegations against the VC. If the VC is found to be guilty during the course of the investigation, he will be ousted automatically,” Singh promised.
He said as the MU is a Central varsity, the state government has certain limitations. However, it has already taken a decision in the Cabinet on the issue and has been pressurizing the Central government to investigate the matter. The Cabinet have also met Governor Najma Heptulla and apprised her of the situation, the CM said.
Replying to a query about the government’s action against policemen who were responsible for allegedly manhandling the protesting students, Singh said the video clippings of the incident had been analysed and a sub-inspector and a constable have been placed under suspension. He also informed that the medical expenses of the injured students would be borne by the state government.
