Manipur registers fresh COVID-19 case, tally rises to 26

A 22-year-old youth has been tested positive for the COVID-19 in Manipur on May 22, 2020.

The youth, who had developed symptoms, was tested on May 21^st, 2020, night at the VRDL, RIMS, the Health Department informed. He has been sent to quarantine at RIMS. However, the patient is stable, an official of the health department informed.

The patient had returned from the national capital recently by road. The administration has started tracing his contract.

With this new case, the total number of positive cases has now increased to 26 and the total number of active cases to 24. “So far, the increase is occurring only in the group of stranded people,” health department stated.

Meanwhile, the government has appealed the public not panic and to follow the Health Ministry guidelines to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus.

Manipur seeks Central assistance

Manipur has sought financial assistance of Rs 100 crore from the Central government for combating the spread of the lethal coronavirus which has infected a total of 25 in the state.

Emphasizing on the need to improve the health infrastructure to contain the spread of the virus, L Jayantakumar Singh, the Health and Family Welfare Minister, Manipur, wrote to the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan seeking the financial assistance.

It is pertinent to be mention that after the first two cases tested negative for the COVID-19, Manipur was gained corona-free status. “However, the situation has changed with detection of 23 confirmed COVID-19 cases within 72 hours in the state,” the minister said.

He further informed that a total of 11,844 people of the state stranded I different parts of the country have returned so far. “Around 40,000 people of the state are stranded in different parts of the country. Of which, 11,844 have returned to the state by bus and train,” the minister said.

Saying that the state has faced a severe financial crisis, the minister said, “The state has no sufficient testing capacity. There is also a shortage of PPEs in the state.”

Northeast

In Northeast India, Assam has registered the maximum number of positive COVID-19 cases followed by Tripura. The virus has infected a total of 222 people and claimed four lives in Assam so far a while it has infected a total of 173 in Tripura. Assam saw a massive spike since May 17. Over 100 cases reported in just four days in the state making the situation grim. However, most of the cases have a travel history.
