The Supreme Court on Friday summoned Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Director Alok Kumar Verma and expressed its resentment over the probe agency’s failure to file chargesheets in seven cases relating to extra-judicial killings in Manipur.
A Bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur ordered Verma to appear before it on Monday at 2 pm. The SC Bench was angry that the Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the CBI was yet to file chargesheets despite completion of the probe.
Earlier in January, the SC had pulled up the SIT for not registering the required number of FIRs as directed earlier. The issue reached the doors of the court following the filing of a PIL that sought an investigation into 1,528 cases of extra-judicial killings in the state of the Northeast.
The SIT was constituted on July 4 last year. It comprises five CBI officers.
