TOKYO: MC Mary Kom defeated Miguelina Hernandez Garcia of the Dominican Republic in the opening round of women's flyweight (48-51kg) category, inching one step closer to a medal.
Mother-of-four MC Mary Kom showed that age is just a number as she started connecting with her punches in the latter stages in the match. She won by split decision 4-1.
In the third and final round, the 40-year old unleashed absolute fury on her 23-year-old opponent and forced her back onto the ropes.
Six-time World Champion and Olympic medallist MC Mary Kom is one of India's biggest medal hopes in the Olympics as she has enough experience at this level to script a historic triumph.
