Imphal (Manipur), 31 July 2018:
A National Investigation Agency (NIA) team raided the residence of Manipur Congress MLA Yamthong Haokip in Imphal’s Mantri Pukhuri area on Monday morning and recovered five pistols. The pistols recovered are suspected to be part of the 56 pistols that went missing from 2nd Manipur Rifles based at Kote. Along with the pistols, 58 magazines were also reportedly went missing.
The MLA represented Saikul Assembly constituency.
Stating that the case related to national security, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh had moved the Centre to hand over the case to NIA for thorough investigation. And on May 30, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs directed the NIA to handle the case.
Court of Special Judge (NIA) Manipur accepted an FIR filed by NIA on June 2. At least five persons suspected to be involved in the arms missing case were subsequently arrested and are now under judicial remand.
