Imphal (Manipur), September 21, 2018:
Over 90 students and six faculty members of Manipur University were detained by the police during a midnight raid on the campus.
Reportedly, the policemen entered the boys’ hostels in search of some students who had allegedly locked up the Vice Chancellor (in-charge) K Yugindro Singh and Registrar (in-charge) Shyam Kesho earlier in the day. Singh and Kesho had gone to take charge when they were targetted.
During the raid, an altercation took place between the police and the students. In order to control the situation, the police fired tear gas shells. Several students were reported to have been injured.
According to the police, they went to the campus in search of the students based on a complaint filed by Singh and Kesho.
