Bimol Akoijam leaves for Delhi following police summons, supporters rally at Imphal Airport

Congress MP from Inner Manipur, Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam, left for New Delhi on October 15 after being summoned by Delhi Police in connection with an FIR registered against him. Supporters gathered at Imphal International Airport to express solidarity with the parliamentarian and raised slogans in his support.

Akoijam was summoned after Delhi Police registered a case following a complaint by Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) Chief Security Officer. The case is linked to sexual harassment allegations raised by students at the university, where Akoijam serves as a professor.

At the airport, supporters raised slogans such as “We support Oja Bimol” and “Stand for Oja Bimol” as they gathered to convey their support before his departure.

Speaking to the media, Akoijam said he was travelling to Delhi in response to the police summons. He urged people not to worry, expressing confidence that justice would be delivered despite what he described as injustices against him.

He also framed the development as part of a broader struggle for justice, saying it marked the beginning of a fight against injustices that the people of Manipur had faced for decades.

“I am acutely aware that today is October 15. This summon is the beginning to fight for injustice that people is facing for many years,” he said.

His reference to October 15 appeared to allude to the date associated with Manipur’s merger with India in 1949. Akoijam’s remarks linked the current legal development to his broader concerns about the historical and political experiences of the people of Manipur.

The allegations against Akoijam remain allegations, and the police proceedings are ongoing.
