Christian bodies condemn killing of Church leaders as Kuki-Zo community observes two-day mourning

The Kuki-Zo community in Manipur on May 14 began a two-day mourning period and 48-hour shutdown following the killing of three church leaders in Kangpokpi district, with several Christian organisations in India and abroad condemning the incident and calling for peace and justice.

The shutdown, called by Kuki Inpi Manipur, began at midnight on May 13. Markets, educational institutions and business establishments remained closed in several Kuki-Zo inhabited areas, while prayer gatherings and condolence meetings were organised across the hill districts.

Preparations were underway in Kangpokpi district for the arrival of the mortal remains of Rev. Dr. V. Sitlhou, Pastor Kaigoulen Lhouvum and Pastor Paogoulen Sitlhou from the district hospital morgue to Brig. M. Thomas Ground, where a public condolence programme was scheduled before their burial on May 15.

The killings have drawn reactions from multiple Christian organisations and church bodies.

The Kuki Worship Service, representing members of the Kuki Christian diaspora in the United Kingdom, condemned the killings and described the incident as an attack on peace and humanity. The organisation paid tribute to Rev. Dr. V. Sitlhou, describing him as a respected church leader involved in peace and reconciliation efforts.

The UK-based body also urged authorities to ensure a transparent investigation into the killings.

In Manipur, the Manipur Baptist Convention condemned the attack and termed it a serious blow to peace and religious harmony. The organisation called for an impartial investigation and stronger measures to protect civilians and religious leaders.

The Council of Baptist Churches in Northeast India, which represents Baptist organisations from several northeastern states, also condemned the killings and appealed for peace, reconciliation and restraint among communities.

Meanwhile, the Kuki Christian Church announced the closure of offices under its administration on May 14 as a mark of mourning and protest.

The incident has further intensified concerns over the fragile security situation in Manipur, where ethnic tensions and sporadic violence have continued in several areas over the past months.

Several organisations have urged the government to conduct a fair investigation and take steps to prevent further escalation of violence in the state.
