Community football tournament opens in Manipur's Kangpokpi, draws large turnout

The 19th Kanggui Inter-Ward Tournament was formally declared open in Kangpokpi District, reinforcing its position as a key community platform for youth engagement and social cohesion through sport.

The tournament was dedicated by Rev. K. Hangshing, Chairman of the Kangpokpi Town Churches Fellowship. J. Kipgen, Chief of J. Songtun village, attended as Chief Guest, while social worker Mamang Khongsai Kuki and Kangpokpi Town Committee Chairman Seilam Singsit were present as Guest of Honour and Functional President respectively. The opening ceremony drew a large turnout of residents, community leaders and sports enthusiasts from across the town’s wards.

A cultural dance by the Kholmun Veng Ward No. 14 Cultural Troupe marked the opening programme.

Organised by the Kangpokpi Youth Union, the inter-ward tournament features teams from different wards competing in main football, veteran football, age-group football and volleyball events for both men and women. All matches are being held at Brigadier M. Thomas Ground, the district headquarters.

Organisers said the event goes beyond competition, aiming to promote harmony, discipline and teamwork while providing a constructive outlet for young people. The tournament has steadily evolved into a shared civic exercise, encouraging healthy rivalry and mutual respect among residents.

The opening day saw closely fought contests, with all three main football matches ending in draws. Jonlhing Veng Ward No. 1 and Kholmun Veng Ward No. 14 played out a goalless draw in the first match. Ahshijolneng Ward No. 17 and Kilkhong Ward No. 13 then shared points in a 2–2 draw, with goals from Jangtinthang and Laltinmang for Ahshijolneng, and Thangminlal and Thangminchon for Kilkhong. The day concluded with another goalless draw between Lamdil Veng Ward No. 5 and Tintong Veng Ward No. 2.

Over the years, the Kanggui Inter-Ward Tournament has become a recurring symbol of unity in Kangpokpi, continuing to strengthen community ties alongside competitive sport.
