Crowd watched as Northeast woman ran for her life after knife, belt attack in Delhi, says victim's sister

Two individuals from the Northeast, including a transgender person from Assam and another person from Manipur, were allegedly attacked by a group of individuals near the Saket Court Complex in New Delhi, raising fresh concerns over safety and harassment faced by people from the region in the national capital.

According to the victim’s sister, the incident occurred when the Assam-based transgender person had gone for a walk in a nearby park with a friend. During the walk, a group of children playing in the park allegedly made remarks at them. When the victims objected to the comments, the situation reportedly escalated.

The victim’s sister alleged that the group became aggressive and began making more objectionable remarks. When her sister again protested, they allegedly attacked her.

“Yesterday evening, my sister went for a walk in the park with a friend. Some children were playing there, and they made comments on them, to which she objected. Hearing her objection, they became aggressive and started making more objectionable comments,” she said.

She further alleged that during the altercation, one of the attackers used a knife while another assaulted the victim with a belt. Despite the attack, the woman reportedly tried to escape by running from the spot.

“During this, a child attacked her with a knife. After this, she was also attacked with a belt. Despite that, she kept running to save her life. Many people were present there, but no one helped her,” the sister said.

The victim later said she wants justice and action against those responsible for the assault. The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding the safety of people from the Northeast and transgender individuals living in the national capital. Police are expected to investigate the incident and identify those involved in the attack.
