Dedicated ambulance service for drivers launched along NH-2 in Manipur's Kangpokpi district
In a major step toward enhancing road safety and welfare for transport workers, the Sadar Hills Inland Transporters and Drivers’ Union (SHITDU) on Tuesday, December 9 launched a dedicated ambulance service exclusively for drivers operating along the Sadar Hills stretch of National Highway-2.
The service, considered a long-pending necessity for the driver community, aims to provide rapid medical assistance during highway emergencies—ranging from road accidents to sudden health complications frequently faced by long-distance transporters.
The inaugural ceremony was attended by SL. Kamkhohao, MPS, Additional SP (L&O) Kangpokpi, who represented Kangpokpi SP Abhinav, IPS, as Chief Guest. Kamkhohao led the ribbon-cutting ceremony, formally inducting the ambulance into service, after which Evan. Lalboi Kipgen offered prayers of dedication.
Speaking at the event, Additional SP Kamkhohao said the ambulance marks “a milestone in strengthening the safety infrastructure of Sadar Hills.” He emphasized that truck and transport drivers often face unpredictable hazards on the road, where immediate medical intervention can mean the difference between life and death.
He further highlighted the importance of collaboration between the transport union and the district police, stressing that coordinated communication can significantly reduce emergency response times.
“The police and the transport fraternity must work hand in hand. This ambulance symbolizes our shared commitment to protecting the drivers who keep goods, services, and the economy moving,” he said.
Samson Kipgen, President of SHITDU, said the ambulance fulfills a long-felt need for the driver community that endures strenuous working hours, harsh terrains, and unpredictable weather conditions.
“Our drivers are the backbone of the transport network. This ambulance will act as a dedicated lifeline in times of distress. Safeguarding those who keep our economy running is our foremost responsibility,” he stated.
He also expressed deep gratitude to the district police for their sustained cooperation and urged continued support for future emergency response efforts.
SHITDU Information Secretary Lenpu Chongloi noted that the ambulance service will operate 24x7, ensuring round-the-clock availability to any driver in urgent need of medical support. He added that the initiative represents a significant leap forward in the union’s commitment to the welfare of its members.
SHITDU is registered under the All India Trade Union Congress, New Delhi (Registration No. 1038 of 2022) and functions as an affiliate of the All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union (AMRTD & MWU).
