Displaced families reject govt aid in Manipur, return Rs 24 lakh citing inadequacy

In a strong show of protest, at least 50 internally displaced families from Ekou village in Imphal East on March 30, returned financial assistance meant for rebuilding their homes, terming the amount “inadequate” for reconstruction.

The families, currently taking shelter in relief camps at Sajiwa and Swombung, collectively returned the first instalment amounting to Rs 24 lakh to the Block Development Officer at Swombung.

According to the protesting families, each household had received Rs 48,000 as the first instalment under a government housing scheme. However, they argued that the total sanctioned amount of Rs 3 lakh per family is insufficient to rebuild their homes.

Expressing dissatisfaction, the families marched to the Swombung C.D Block office around noon and handed back the funds, demanding a revision of the financial package.

The displaced persons also highlighted their worsening condition, stating they are unable to return to their native village due to the prevailing situation. They added that even if they do return, the current assistance would not cover the actual cost of construction.

Warning of prolonged displacement, the families said that without adequate financial support, reconstruction and resettlement would remain a distant goal.
