Drivers’ Union SHITDU marks Driver’s Day with humanitarian outreach programme

Marking Driver’s Day, the Sadar Hills Inland Transporters and Driver’s Union (SHITDU) organised a humanitarian outreach programme along National Highway-2 at Champhai, Manipur, distributing drinking water, fruit juice, and food items to drivers and inland transporters travelling on the busy route.

The initiative was warmly welcomed by drivers, many of whom expressed gratitude to the union for recognising their hard work and challenges. Several drivers said this was the first time they had witnessed such an organised effort on Driver’s Day along NH-2, calling the gesture encouraging and morale-boosting.

Driver’s Day is observed to honour the dedication and sacrifices of drivers who play a vital role in maintaining the supply chain and ensuring the smooth movement of essential goods. Despite long working hours, difficult terrain, security challenges, and limited rest facilities, drivers continue to remain the backbone of inland transportation.

Speaking on the occasion, SHITDU spokesperson Lenpu Chongloi extended warm greetings to drivers and highlighted their crucial role, particularly during times of crisis and hardship. He acknowledged their contribution in keeping essential services and economic activities running in the region.

Chongloi also appealed to the public, authorities, and stakeholders to show greater respect and understanding towards drivers. Stressing the dignity of labour, he said drivers deserve continuous support, safety, and humane treatment, not just recognition on special occasions.
