Former Manipur CM Biren Singh expresses hope for restoration of popular government in state

Amid ongoing political uncertainty in Manipur, former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh has expressed optimism that the Centre may soon consider reinstating a popular government in the state. His remarks came while addressing the media following the release of the book “The Emergency Diaries”, which chronicles Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contributions during the 1975 Emergency as a young RSS pracharak.

Speaking at the event, Biren Singh stated, “We are hopeful that the central leadership is evaluating the ground situation in Manipur. It has been over seven to eight months since any communal clashes have taken place. This indicates a gradual return of peace, which could pave the way for restoring an elected government.”

The former Chief Minister further said that even the NDA government desires the re-establishment of a democratic government in Manipur. However, the prevailing circumstances earlier this year necessitated the imposition of President’s Rule. He noted that regular consultations and meetings have taken place among BJP MLAs in the state to discuss the matter.

"Being a national party, the BJP cannot make unilateral decisions at the state level without alignment from the central leadership," he added.

In response to media queries regarding the political blame game witnessed in Manipur, Biren clarified, “The BJP is not engaging in criticism. Our focus is on restoring peace and achieving a sustainable, amicable solution. We are seeing visible improvement in peace, and the Union Home Minister is continuously putting in efforts to stabilise the region.”

Commenting on a recent statement by a Mizoram minister linking the rise in crime to illegal immigration, Biren called it a positive opportunity for interstate cooperation, stating that he is ready to work with neighbouring states to jointly address the issue of illegal infiltration.

When asked about Prime Minister Modi’s possible visit to Manipur next month, the former CM said, “We have not received any official information regarding such a visit so far.”

Manipur has been under President’s Rule since February 2025, following the resignation of Biren Singh as Chief Minister amid escalating ethnic tensions. The state assembly was placed under suspended animation, though its official tenure remains valid till 2027, as per a notification from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
