Goods trucks bound for Manipur stranded near Silchar, perishable Cargo begins to rot
Hundreds of cargo trucks transporting essential goods from Silchar to Manipur have been stranded for the past several days due to the prevailing security situation in Manipur, leaving transporters facing mounting losses.
A long queue of 8-wheel and 12-wheel trucks has been lined up along the Silchar–Jiribam road after authorities halted the movement of goods vehicles as a precautionary measure amid the tense situation in the neighbouring state.
Truck drivers said the vehicles have remained stationary for nearly seven days, resulting in large quantities of perishable items, including fish and vegetables, beginning to rot inside the trucks.
Apart from the loss of cargo, the drivers also complained of difficulties in maintaining and restarting their vehicles after remaining parked for an extended period. They said the prolonged halt has caused significant financial hardship and logistical challenges.
The stranded drivers urged the authorities to take appropriate measures to restore the safe movement of cargo vehicles at the earliest, warning that continued delays could lead to further economic losses and disruption in the supply of essential commodities.
