Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla leads state in paying glorious tribute to Anglo-Manipur war heroes on Patriots' Day

Manipur observed Patriots’ Day, honouring the brave souls who sacrificed their lives defending the sovereignty of the state during the historic Anglo-Manipur War of 1891. The commemoration was led by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla, who, along with the First Lady, Members of the Legislative Assembly, Chief Secretary, Security Advisor, Director General of Police, and senior civil and police officers, paid floral tributes to the legendary warriors.

The day began with ceremonies at Heecham Yaicham Pat, Moirangkhom, and Thangal Temple, Palace Compound, where dignitaries paid their respects. In the afternoon, the Governor, accompanied by other leaders, attended a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Kangla Uttra.

A key highlight was the tribute at the Shaheed Minar, where the Governor, MLAs, and senior officers honoured martyrs with a Guard of Honour and gun salute by contingents of the Manipur Rifles. Floral tributes were also offered at the memorial stone dedicated to exiled martyrs of the 1891 War.

In his address, Governor Bhalla paid homage to iconic heroes such as Yuvaraj Bir Tikendrajit, Thangal General, and Paona Brajabashi, alongside countless unnamed warriors who fought with unyielding courage against British colonial forces. “Patriots’ Day is not just about remembering the past—it is about living the ideals our heroes fought for,” he said, urging people to uphold unity as the state’s greatest shield and youth as its most powerful weapon for change.

Reflecting on the state’s current challenges, the Governor stressed that lessons from history should guide the future. He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working closely with the Centre and local communities to restore peace, advance development, and promote inclusive growth.

Chief Secretary Dr Puneet Kumar Goel echoed the Governor’s sentiments, highlighting the Anglo-Manipur War as a testament to the indomitable spirit of Manipuri warriors. He called upon the youth to uphold values of courage, integrity, and unity while contributing to the state’s progress.

As part of the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, the Governor also administered a pledge to fight drug abuse, underscoring the importance of a united stand against the menace.

The event was attended by MLAs, security officials, high-ranking civil servants, and students, marking a day of pride, remembrance, and renewed commitment to the ideals of freedom, unity, and peace.
