Heavy rain, hailstorm disrupt normal life across Manipur, houses damaged, crops hit

Normal life was disrupted in several parts of Manipur following heavy rainfall accompanied by hailstorm and gusty winds, which caused damage to houses and standing crops across multiple districts.

The inclement weather, which swept across the state on Sunday, triggered widespread disruption in daily activities as strong winds and hailstones battered residential areas and agricultural fields. Local reports indicated that several houses suffered partial damage while crop fields in affected areas were hit by the sudden spell of extreme weather.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the adverse weather conditions are likely to persist, with forecasts predicting thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds of 40–60 kmph, and moderate rainfall ranging between 5–15 mm per hour in several districts.

The districts likely to be impacted include Bishnupur, Chandel, Churachandpur, Imphal East, Imphal West, Jiribam, Kakching, Kamjong, Kangpokpi, Noney, Pherzawl, Senapati, Tamenglong, Tengnoupal, Thoubal and Ukhrul.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable areas to remain vigilant and follow safety advisories issued by the concerned agencies. People have been advised to avoid taking shelter under trees or weak structures during thunderstorms, monitor road and traffic conditions, and refrain from unnecessary travel while the adverse weather persists.

Officials also stressed the importance of closely following updates and warnings issued by the meteorological department as the state continues to experience unstable weather conditions.

Meanwhile, local administrations are monitoring the situation and assessing the extent of damage caused by the storm, particularly to residential structures and agricultural land.
